How We Did It

AAC Circle graph

American Addiction Centers (AAC) was, at one time, one of the largest substance use treatment providers in the country and the only treatment provider that has ever gone public. Due to major changes in the industry that it was not able to keep up with, AAC filed for bankruptcy in 2019, changing over previous leadership and ownership structures.

Coming out of the bankruptcy, AAC had a lot of work to do and they knew they couldn’t do it on their own. Clearly, what had worked in the past was no longer working and they needed some outside expertise, so we were called in to do our full CORE-M 360 degree strategy and growth consult across Operations, Admissions, Marketing, Call Center, and Business Development.

Prior to the bankruptcy, and under previous leadership (that was no longer with the company), AAC had been known for very aggressive, often dubious, marketing tactics. Since then, under the leadership of the phenomenal Stephen Ebbett, AAC’s marketing had been overhauled to focus on transparent, branded campaigns. However, far more than marketing optimization was still needed if AAC wanted to grow, and that’s where we brought our expertise to the table.

Challenges That AAC Was Dealing With

  • AAC needed more growth but wasn’t sure which direction to go in to achieve it
  • Rather than a singular focus on new patient admissions, they needed a comprehensive strategy across business units
  • Due to previous leadership’s conflict with NAATP, AAC was still banned from advertising on channels such as Google Ads, Facebook, and Bing as it was blocked from acquiring the necessary LegitScript certification. They needed sophisticated strategies outside of the main channels many other providers traditionally rely upon
  • AAC was a huge organization. While each department had rockstars, there was no role within the organization with expertise in cross-functional or interdepartmental analysis and integration.
  • Coming out of the bankruptcy, everyone was inordinately busy and no one had the time to take on such a massive project spanning locations, service lines, and departments

The Solution

• Circle Social put together a 3-month plan utilizing its CORE-M 360 framework consisting of onsite facility visits, staff interviews and observations, structured leadership meetings, data analysis, SOP overviews, review of internal communications and goal setting, and overall market and business plan analysis.

• This resulted in a 100+ page report providing strategic objectives per business unit and for the company overall with granular breakdowns of exactly how to achieve those objectives with what resources and in what timeline.
